As you’ve probably heard, Xbox Live is currently celebrating their fifth anniversary (officially started on November 15th, 2002). They are hosting a handful of events and giving away some free stuff.I already posted about the XBL Arcade game, Carcassonne, that will be available to download free for 48 hours, and now it looks like they are also offering six free Xbox 360 dashboard themes. They all look pretty cool to me, but why don’t you have a look for yourself:
Live is 5ive Theme:
I like the simplicity here, but it might be a bit too plain. I would have liked to see more colors other than just the plain gray background.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein Theme:
This theme looks very cool, but I think they should have left the Wolfenstein logo off of the backgrounds. It shouldn’t be there if it just gets obscured by the blades.
Gears of War Theme:
This is my favorite; a great theme for a great game. The background images are stunning and the logo actually compliments them, unlike the logo in the Wolfenstein theme.
Ghost Recon 2 Theme:
This one is my least favorite. The background images are just too dull and the ones with characters in them appear poorly rendered.
Halo 2 Theme:
This will probably be the most popular just because it’s Halo. I do like it, but not as much as the Gears theme.
MechAssault Theme:
My second favorite. Those large robots just look cool and they are represented nicely on all of the blades.
Anyways, those are just the Xbox Live backgrounds for the six freely available themes. To see the backgrounds for all of the blades, check out the official web page.
The one thing that bothers me about ALL Xbox 360 dashboard themes is the tiled backgrounds for the guide. Why can’t they just let you use the default? I usually stick with the default theme for this reason. I would love to have the themed backgrounds with the clean and easy to read guide.
In addition to these six themes, they are also giving away 500 free Microsoft Points to all members who have been a part of Xbox Live since the beginning. I wasn’t such an early adopter, so I won’t be receiving that gift. How about you?
